It can be tricky to figure out what to wear in Oregon in September and early October, so your best bet is to pack a variety of things for both warm and cool weather and peel off or add on layers if you need to.

What is the Oregon Coast like in Winter? Cold and wet most of the time! As locals, we love the Oregon Coast in winter with its moody weather, blankets of fog that hug the coastline, Dungeness crab season, gray whale migration, bowls of hot clam chowder, sitting by a cozy fire and the list could go on.

Visitors can enjoy watching storms and king tides as well as whale watching, having more options and lower prices for hotel rooms and fewer (if any) crowds. Just be sure to bundle up and bring insulated clothes and waterproof outerwear that will keep you warm and dry, especially if you plan on spending time outdoors.

Packing for a spring trip to the Oregon Coast is very similar to early fall, with a few light summer items thrown in just in case. March can still be quite wintery while May has the potential for a few random summery days.

It’s good to be prepared for anything in spring. If you are visiting in-between seasons it’s not a bad idea to pack with both seasons in mind as Oregon weather can be unpredictable.

Summer is the most popular time to visit the Oregon Coast and is the high tourism season for the whole state. Summers are usually dry and pleasantly cool at the coast, but we can get unusually hot days and occasional summer rain showers.

The cool summer temperatures at the coast make it a popular place for Portlanders and other Oregon residents to beat the heat. Highs are generally 60 to 70F and the beaches are quite breezy most of the time.

Flotation devices are recommended (due to strong rip currents, sneaker waves, driftwood and rocky environments, swimming in the ocean can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers. See our FAQ for more about swimming at the Oregon Coast.
