How to Choose the Right Waterproof Footwear

Water-Resistant vs Waterproof

Water-resistant footwear is treated to repel water from the surface, so it rolls off the fabric. It will still allow some water to get in, especially if you step in a puddle, but it’s also more breathable and dries out faster.

Waterproof footwear usually includes an inner waterproof membrane like Gore-Tex that seals water out while still allowing vapors to escape and will also have features like sealed seams and zippers.

Waterproof footwear may be too hot for some people and if your foot does get wet, whether it’s from sweat or heavy rain, it won’t dry out very quickly.

In the Pacific Northwest, however, it gets cold and wet enough in the fall, winter and early spring that waterproof footwear is recommended.

Which option you choose will depend on your personal preferences and activity level. If you’ll be highly active and sweating, a water-resistant shoe may be better for you. If you can’t stand having cold, wet feet and just need something for walking around town, go for waterproof.

Insulation

Even though we typically don’t get a ton of deep snow in the lower elevations, a good pair of insulated waterproof boots will keep your feet a whole lot warmer than a pair of rubber rain boots. Look for boots that are insulated inside and waterproof on the outside. You can also wear insulated socks (we’ll link to some below).

Traction

For slippery trails and icy sidewalks, a toothy, nubby tread pattern will provide more anti-slip grip. Check the bottom of the shoe and avoid flat, smooth or wavy tread patterns.

Fit and Weight

If buying online, be sure to check the return policy, reviews, size charts and take foot measurements to get the right fit. Also check the weight of the boot or shoe to make sure it’s not going to be too heavy or clunky.

Activity

If you spend a lot of time on your feet, be sure your shoes have ample cushioning and support to match your activity level. For example, hiking boots may work well on trails but be too bulky for running around town.

Below is a list of top waterproof shoes and boots for walking, running, hiking and other outdoor activities in the Pacific Northwest to help you decide.

Don’t forget about good thermal socks! Moisture-wicking, merino wool socks will help keep your toes toasty and dry, especially if your boots aren’t very insulating.

Kiwi Boot Waterproofer spray can also help with water resistance. Make sure your boots are clean and dry and follow the instructions for best results (may have to be reapplied).

The best waterproof shoes and boots for the Pacific Northwest should be durable enough to last for at least a few rainy seasons, but cheaper versions may have to be replaced every year. If you spend a lot of time outdoors or live in the Northwest or any cold location, it’s a good idea to invest in a quality pair of waterproof boots that will last. Your feet will appreciate it!
