About Long Beach Peninsula

The Long Beach peninsula is part of the traditional territory of the five tribes of the Chinook Indian Nation: Clatsop, Cathlamet, Lower Chinook, Wahkiakum and Willapa. The Chinook people resisted removal efforts by the U.S. government in the 1850s and are still fighting for federal recognition today. For more information, visit the Chinook Indian Nation.

White settlers began arriving to the region in the 1800s and Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery explored the area while they were camped out in nearby Astoria, Oregon in the winter of 1805.

The town of Long Beach was officially incorporated in 1922 and grew into a hub for oyster farming and tourism. Today, Long Beach has a population of about 1,400 residents.

Visit Cape Disappointment State Park

Cape Disappointment State Park sits at the mouth of the Columbia River, also known as “The Graveyard of the Pacific” where thousands of ships have been lost at sea trying to navigate the turbulent waters.

In 1788, after Spanish explorer Bruno de Hezeta found the mouth of the river and thought it was a bay, British explorer John Meares arrived hoping he would prove him wrong and claim the river for England. Meares also concluded the mouth of the river was just a bay, thus naming it Deception Bay and Cape Disappointment.

Four years later, American explorer Robert Gray was the first to finally navigate through the mouth of the river, naming it Columbia after his own ship.

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

There are two historic lighthouses in Cape Disappointment State Park. Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, completed in 1856, sits on the south side of the cape at the mouth of the Columbia River. This lighthouse is not open to the public and the trail leading out to it was closed due to safety concerns. Waikiki Beach, a small, driftwood-lined cove surrounded by cliffs, has a nice view of the lighthouse above.

The North Head Lighthouse, completed in 1898, is perched on the northwest side of the cape facing the Pacific Ocean. It is open to visitors May through September. This lighthouse was featured on an episode of Ghost Adventures in 2018 on the Travel Channel.

There are two low tides and two high tides every day in Long Beach. Low tide is usually the best time for beachcombing and clamming, but Long Beach has plenty of sandy beach to enjoy at any time of day.

For your safety, be aware of the tide schedule before boating or heading out to rocky or remote beaches and always keep an eye on the water level. Use extreme caution in rocky areas near the water, where sneaker waves can (and do) strike.

🌊 Check tide tables for the daily high and low tide times or ask at state park offices, local visitor information centers and many stores and hotels for a free tide table booklet.
